A Local's Guide

Nikiti & Sithonia — Beaches, Tavernas & Hidden Corners of Halkidiki

Sithonia is the middle finger of the three Halkidiki peninsulas — pine forests tumbling into turquoise coves, sleepy fishing villages and some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean. Here are the spots we send every Terra Alegra guest to, written by the people who live here year-round.

Chapter 01

The Best Beaches in Sithonia

From organised family bays five minutes from Terra Alegra to secret coves worth the drive — these are the swims that define a Sithonia summer.

Kalogria Beach

5 min drive

A long stretch of fine golden sand with shallow turquoise water — perfect for families and lazy afternoons. Several beach bars line the back of the bay.

Spathies Beach

10 min drive

A quieter local favourite framed by pine trees. Bring a mask — the rocky edges hide small fish and clear pockets ideal for snorkelling.

Lagomandra Beach

15 min drive

Two organised coves with crystalline water and beach service. Great for sunbeds, cocktails and a long lunch by the sea.

Karydi Beach (Vourvourou)

35 min drive

Often called the most beautiful beach in Sithonia. Powder-white sand and Caribbean blues — go early to claim a spot under the pines.

Kavourotrypes

55 min drive

A string of secret coves between Armenistis and Sarti carved into white rock. Bring water, swim shoes and a sense of adventure.

Orange Beach

60 min drive

Iconic granite boulders rising from electric-blue water. One of the most photographed spots in all of Halkidiki.

Chapter 02

Where to Eat in Nikiti

Nikiti's food scene is gloriously simple: just-caught fish, garden vegetables, local olive oil and wine from the surrounding hills. These are the tables we return to season after season.

The Old Village Square (Paliá Niκητη)

Tavernas & meze

Cobblestone alleys lined with family-run tavernas serving grilled octopus, fresh fish and slow-cooked Greek classics under the bougainvillea.

Seafront Fish Tavernas

Seafood

Along Nikiti's promenade you'll find the day's catch displayed on ice — sea bream, red mullet and calamari grilled simply with lemon and olive oil.

Porto Valitsa & Akti Pefkari

Beach dining

Stylish beach clubs further down the peninsula for long lunches with your feet near the sand and a chilled bottle of Assyrtiko.

Local Bakeries

Breakfast

Start the day with tyropita, bougatsa and freshly squeezed orange juice from the village bakeries — a five-minute walk from Terra Alegra.

Chapter 03

Things to Do Beyond the Beach

When you've had your fill of swimming, Halkidiki opens up: ancient ruins, mountain villages, monasteries on the sea and some of Greece's most exciting wineries — all within easy reach of Nikiti.

Boat trip around Mount Athos

Half-day cruises depart from Ormos Panagias. Sail along the dramatic monasteries of the Holy Mountain — a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Porto Carras vineyards

One of Greece's largest organic wineries, 25 minutes south. Tours and tastings of indigenous varieties like Limnio and Assyrtiko.

Hiking Itamos & Parthenonas

Pine-scented trails above the abandoned mountain village of Parthenonas reward you with panoramic views over the Toroneos Gulf.

Ancient Olynthos

A 30-minute drive inland — one of the best-preserved classical Greek cities, with intact mosaics and an evocative archaeological site.

Sunset at Cape Drepano

Locals' favourite spot to watch the sun melt into the Aegean — bring a blanket and a bottle of cold rosé.

Diving & snorkelling

Clear visibility, gentle currents and rocky reefs make Sithonia ideal for first-time divers and experienced snorkellers alike.

Chapter 04

When to Visit Sithonia

Sithonia has a long, generous season. Choose your moment based on the kind of holiday you want.

May & June
Wildflowers, warm sea (22–24°C), quiet beaches and long evenings. Our favourite time of year.
July & August
Peak summer — hot days, lively village squares and the full beach-club programme. Book early.
September & October
The sea is at its warmest, the crowds have gone and the light turns golden. Ideal for couples and slow travellers.
